What does *67 mean? How to block your number on a call

Dial *67 before any number to hide your caller ID for that one call. Here's how it works, the limits, and how to do the reverse.

*67 is the North-American star code that hides your caller ID for a single call. Dial *67, then the number you're calling, and the person sees "Private," "Blocked," or "Unknown" instead of your number. It resets automatically after that one call. This guide covers exactly how it works, the cases where it won't hide you, and how to do the reverse with *82.

Caller ID — codes you need

  • *67 + number

    Block your number (one call)

Dial *67, then the number. You show as Private / Blocked / Unknown for that single call.

  • *82 + number

    Unblock your number (one call)

Reveals your caller ID for one call, even if your line is set to block by default.

  • #31#

    Block on every call (GSM)

Hides your number on all outgoing calls. Undo with *31#. For AT&T, T-Mobile and other GSM lines.

What *67 means

*67 is a caller-ID blocking code. It tells your phone carrier: for this next call only, don't send my number to the person I'm calling. They'll see "Private," "Blocked," "Anonymous," or "No Caller ID" depending on their phone and carrier.

It's a network feature, not a phone feature — which is why the same *67 works on a 20-year-old landline and a brand-new smartphone. It works on virtually every US and Canadian landline, cable-VoIP, and wireless line.

The key word is *temporary*: *67 affects only the single call you place right after dialing it. Your next call shows your number normally again.

How to block your number with *67 (step by step)

  1. Open your phone's dialer.
  2. Dial *67 immediately followed by the full number, with no spaces or dashes. Example: *675551234567.
  3. Press the call button.
  4. The call connects as normal — there's no confirmation tone. The recipient just sees a blocked/private label instead of your number.

That's the whole thing. To block your number on the *next* call too, you dial *67 again — it does not stay on.

When *67 won't hide your number

*67 is not bulletproof. It won't hide your number in these cases:

  • 911 and emergency services. Emergency dispatch always receives your number and location — *67 is ignored.
  • Many toll-free numbers (800, 888, 877…). Toll-free lines pay for the call and can capture your number through a separate system called ANI, regardless of *67.
  • Law enforcement and subpoenas. Blocking is a display setting, not anonymity — your carrier still has the record.
  • Recipients who reject anonymous calls. If the person you're calling has Anonymous Call Rejection turned on (often *77), your blocked call won't ring through at all — they've chosen not to accept calls with no caller ID.

*82: how to unblock your number for one call

If your line is set to hide your number on *every* call, *82 is the reverse of *67 — it reveals your caller ID for one call.

Dial *82 followed by the number (for example *825551234567) and press call. Your number shows for that call only, then your line goes back to blocking. This is handy when you're calling a business that rejects anonymous callers and you need to get through.

How to block your number on every call

*67 is per-call. If you want your number hidden on *all* outgoing calls:

  • GSM phones (AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Mint, most international): dial #31# and press call to turn on permanent blocking. Undo it with *31#.
  • Verizon and most carriers: turn on "Caller ID blocking" in your account settings or your phone's call settings, or ask the carrier to enable per-line blocking. Then use *82 to show your number when you need to.

A quick check: dial *#31# on a GSM phone to see whether your number is currently set to hidden.

A caveat for businesses

Blocking your caller ID is great for personal privacy — but it's the wrong move for a business making outbound calls. People rarely answer "Unknown" or "Private" numbers, so a blocked business call usually goes unanswered, and a returned call has nothing to dial back.

If the problem you're actually trying to solve is *incoming* calls you keep missing, the fix isn't blocking — it's making sure every call gets answered. RingOwl is an AI answering service: forward your business line and the AI picks up every call, books appointments, and texts you a summary, so you never trade reachability for a number you can't return.

FAQ

What does *67 do?
Dialing *67 immediately before a phone number hides your caller ID for that one call. The person you're calling sees "Private," "Blocked," or "Unknown" instead of your number. It resets to normal after the call.
What is *67?
*67 is the North-American star code (a "vertical service code") for per-call caller-ID blocking. It's a carrier-network feature, so it works the same on any phone — landline, cable VoIP, or cell.
Does *67 still work?
Yes. *67 still works on virtually all US and Canadian landline, cable-VoIP, and wireless lines. It won't hide you from 911, many toll-free numbers, or law enforcement, and recipients who reject anonymous calls won't receive a blocked call.
How do I unblock my number after using *67?
You don't need to — *67 only affects the single call you make right after dialing it. If your line blocks your number on every call, dial *82 before a number to reveal your caller ID for that one call.
Can the person I call see my number if I use *67?
Not on their caller ID — they'll see Private or Blocked. But the call isn't truly anonymous: 911, many toll-free lines (via ANI), and law enforcement can still identify your number.
Does *67 work on cell phones?
Yes. *67 works on both iPhone and Android because it's a carrier feature, not a phone feature. Dial *67, then the number, then press call.
