What is a call forwarding code?

A call forwarding code is a short dial sequence — like *72 on Verizon or **21*on AT&T and T-Mobile — that tells your phone carrier where to send your incoming calls. It's a network feature, not a phone feature, so the same codes work on iPhone and Android.

There are three common variants. Unconditional forwarding sends every call to a new destination. Conditional forwarding (sometimes called busy/no-answer forwarding) only redirects when your line is busy or doesn't answer in about four rings — useful if you want to answer when you can and have an AI receptionist or backup line catch the rest. Cancel forwarding turns it off.

The tool above gives you the right code for your carrier and condition. The full reference table below lists star codes for every major North-American carrier so you can confirm.

Call forwarding FAQ

  • What is a call forwarding code?+

A call forwarding code is a short sequence (like *72 on Verizon or **21* on AT&T and T-Mobile) you dial on your phone to tell your carrier where to send incoming calls. The carrier handles the redirect — you don't need new equipment or a new number.

  • What's the difference between *72 and *71?+

On most North-American carriers, *72 forwards every call (unconditional). *71 forwards only when your line is busy or doesn't answer in about four rings (conditional). *71 is what most small businesses want — you keep the option of answering directly, and the AI or backup line catches whatever you miss.

  • How do I cancel call forwarding?+

On most US/Canadian carriers, dial *73 from the same phone you set the forwarding from. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Rogers use ##21# instead (the GSM cancel code). The tool above gives you the right cancel code for your carrier when you pick the Cancel option.

  • Does call forwarding work on iPhone and Android?+

Yes — the codes work the same way regardless of phone model. They're carrier features, not phone features. Dial the code, press the call or send button, and the carrier confirms (either a tone or a text message).

  • What if my carrier isn't in the list?+

Pick "Other US carrier" or "Other Canadian carrier" — the default *72 / *71 / *73 codes work on the vast majority of North-American carriers. If they don't, search your carrier name plus "call forwarding star code" — every carrier publishes them.

  • Does forwarding calls cost extra?+

Carrier policies vary, but call forwarding is included on most modern wireless and VoIP plans at no extra cost. Forwarded calls do use airtime/minutes on the line they're forwarded from. Check with your carrier if you're on an older plan or international setup.

  • Can I forward calls only outside business hours?+

Direct time-of-day scheduling isn't a star-code feature — but conditional forwarding (*71 / **61*) achieves the same thing in practice: you answer during the day, and anything you don't pick up forwards to your AI receptionist or backup line automatically.
