How to block a number on Android

Block any caller from your call log — plus turn on automatic spam filtering.

Android makes blocking a number quick: open your recent calls, tap the number, and choose block. The exact wording shifts a little between phone brands, but the path is nearly identical on Pixel and most stock-Android devices. Samsung has its own Phone app, so we cover that separately below. If you're on an iPhone, see our iPhone blocking guide instead. For the overview across every phone, start at how to block a number.

Block a number from your call log (Pixel & stock Android)

On a Pixel or most Android phones using Google's Phone app:

  1. Open the Phone app and tap Recents.
  2. Tap (or long-press) the number you want to block.
  3. Tap Block / report spam.
  4. Optionally tick the box to report it as spam, then tap Block.

That number can no longer call or text you. To undo it later, return to the same number and choose Unblock.

Turn on Caller ID & spam protection

Google's Phone app can flag and filter suspected spam automatically.

  1. Open the Phone app and tap the three-dot menu (or your profile icon).
  2. Tap Settings, then Caller ID & spam.
  3. Turn on See caller and spam ID.
  4. To send obvious spam straight to voicemail, also turn on Filter spam calls.

With this on, your phone labels suspected spam in red and can stop the worst offenders from ringing at all.

Block a number on Samsung Galaxy phones

Samsung uses its own Phone app, so the menus look different.

  1. Open Phone and tap Recents.
  2. Tap the number, then tap Block (you may need the three-dot menu first).
  3. Confirm to finish.

You can also manage everything in one place: open Settings → Block numbers in the Phone app. From there you can add numbers by hand and flip on Block calls from unidentified callers to stop hidden and unknown numbers.

Block unknown and private numbers

If the calls come from hidden, private, or 'No Caller ID' numbers, blocking one at a time won't help. Instead:

  • On Samsung, use Settings → Block numbers → Block calls from unidentified callers.
  • On Pixel/stock Android, turn on Filter spam calls and consider your carrier's spam app.

Just know this filters out *every* unknown caller — including a first-time customer. Our unknown caller guide walks through the trade-offs on both Android and iPhone.

Don't let blocking cost you real customers

Blocking and spam filters are great at stopping junk — but they can't tell a robocall from a brand-new customer calling for the first time. Crank the filters too high and you start missing the calls that pay the bills.

RingOwl handles that gap. It answers every legit call 24/7, screens out the noise, and books appointments right into your calendar. Spam wastes no human time, and real customers always get a warm, helpful answer. See our 24/7 answering service.

FAQ

How do I unblock a number on Android?
On Pixel or stock Android, open the Phone app, find the number in Recents, tap it, and choose Unblock. On Samsung, go to the Phone app's Settings → Block numbers, find the number, and tap the minus icon next to it.
Where is the blocked numbers list on Android?
On Google's Phone app, tap the three-dot menu → Settings → Blocked numbers. On Samsung, open Phone → Settings → Block numbers. Both screens let you add and remove numbers.
Does blocking a number on Android also block texts?
Usually yes. Blocking a number through the Phone app generally stops its calls, and on most devices its texts are filtered into a blocked or spam folder in your Messages app as well.
Why does the block option look different on my phone?
Android phone makers customize the dialer. Pixel and most phones use Google's Phone app with 'Block / report spam,' while Samsung uses its own app with a 'Block numbers' screen. The steps above cover both.
Can I block all unknown callers on Android?
On Samsung, yes — turn on 'Block calls from unidentified callers' under Settings → Block numbers. On stock Android, use 'Filter spam calls' plus your carrier's spam app. Remember this also blocks first-time customers and other legitimate unknown numbers.

Block the spam. Never miss a real customer.
