How to block a number on iPhone

Three taps in the Phone app and that caller is gone for good.

Blocking a number on your iPhone takes about three taps once you know where to look. You can block a caller from your recent calls, manage your whole blocked list in Settings, and even silence every number you don't recognize. This guide covers all three. If you're on Android or Samsung instead, head to our Android blocking guide. For the big-picture overview across all phones, see how to block a number.

Block a number from your recent calls

This is the fastest way when the caller has already phoned you.

  1. Open the Phone app and tap Recents at the bottom.
  2. Find the number, then tap the (i) info icon to its right.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Block this Caller.
  4. Tap Block Contact to confirm.

That's it. Calls, FaceTime, and messages from that number will now be silenced.

Block a number from Messages or Contacts

Already texting with the number? Block it from there.

  1. Open the conversation in Messages.
  2. Tap the contact name or number at the top.
  3. Tap Info, scroll down, and tap Block this Caller.

From a saved contact, open the contact card, scroll to the bottom, and tap Block this Caller the same way.

Manage your blocked contacts

To see, add, or unblock numbers all in one place:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Phone.
  3. Tap Blocked Contacts.

Here you'll see every number you've blocked. Tap Add New... to block a contact directly, or swipe left on a number and tap Unblock to remove it from the list.

Silence unknown callers

If the problem is calls from numbers you don't know at all, iPhone has a stronger setting.

  1. Open Settings and tap Phone.
  2. Tap Silence Unknown Callers and turn it on.

Now calls from any number not in your contacts, recent outgoing calls, or Siri suggestions go straight to voicemail without ringing. It's powerful — but be careful: a brand-new customer, delivery driver, or doctor's office calling for the first time will also be silenced. For business lines, that's a real trade-off worth weighing.

The numbers you don't want to silence

Silencing unknown callers stops spam, but it also stops the calls that grow your business. A first-time customer or an after-hours emergency comes from a number you've never seen — exactly the kind iPhone silences.

RingOwl solves that. It answers every call 24/7, screens out the junk, and books real appointments into your calendar — so spam wastes no time and genuine customers always reach a friendly voice. See how our 24/7 answering service keeps every wanted call from slipping through.

FAQ

How do I unblock a number on iPhone?
Go to Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts, swipe left on the number you want to unblock, and tap Unblock. The caller can reach you again immediately, and they're never told they were blocked or unblocked.
What happens when a blocked number calls my iPhone?
The call doesn't ring your phone — it goes straight to voicemail. The blocked caller hears your normal voicemail greeting and has no way to tell they've been blocked.
Does blocking a number on iPhone also block texts and FaceTime?
Yes. When you block a caller, you block their phone calls, FaceTime calls, and iMessages/SMS all at once. There's no separate step for each.
Will 'Silence Unknown Callers' block important calls?
It can. Any number not in your contacts, recent outgoing calls, or Siri suggestions is silenced and sent to voicemail — including first-time customers, delivery drivers, and offices calling you for the first time. Turn it on only if you regularly check voicemail.
Can I block a number that isn't in my recent calls?
Yes. Go to Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts and tap 'Add New...' to pick someone from your contacts. To block a number you haven't saved, add it as a contact first, then block it.
