The best time to call Social Security

Social Security's own guidance on timing, the hours in your time zone, and the catch in its official wait-time numbers.

Last reviewed

Social Security's own advice: waits are "typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month." So the quickest time is usually a Thursday or Friday morning in the second half of the month. Representatives answer 800-772-1213 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. your local time, Monday to Friday.

When to call, and when not to

The left column is Social Security's guidance; the right is the flip side of it. Early in the month is when most benefit payments go out, which is when many people call. The line is closed on weekends and federal holidays.

How the callback works

If your estimated wait to reach a person is over 5 minutes, you're told the estimate and offered a callback that keeps your place in line. Two things to know:

  • Social Security doesn't tell you when the callback will come.
  • Callbacks that haven't happened by the end of the day are cancelled, not carried to the next day. If you plan to take one, call in the morning.

What the official wait times leave out

Social Security reported an average speed of answer of 0.5 minutes in September 2026 and 5.6 minutes for fiscal year 2026. Those numbers count anyone who accepts a callback as zero wait, and don't include the time spent waiting for the callback.

The Social Security Inspector General's December 2025 report showed the gap: in fiscal year 2025, people who held waited from about 19 minutes to over an hour and a half depending on the month, and callbacks took about an hour and 49 minutes on average. Waits have come down a lot since, but plan for longer than the headline number.

Skip the call: what works without a person

Social Security calls its website the best way to get help. The automated phone service also handles these 24 hours a day, with no wait:

  • A benefit verification letter
  • A replacement SSA-1099 or Medicare card
  • Claim status
  • Your local office's address
  • An address or phone change, if you already get benefits

Reaching a person on the menu

Social Security doesn't publish menu shortcuts. Callers commonly report that saying "agent" or "representative" at the prompt asking what you're calling about, or pressing 0, moves you toward a person. Have your Social Security number and any letter you received ready.

Menu path to a person (reported by callers, not published by Social Security; menus change)

  1. 1At the prompt asking what you're calling about, say "agent" or "representative".
  2. 2If asked again, repeat it, or press 0.
  • If the estimated wait is over 5 minutes, you'll be offered a callback that keeps your place in line. Callbacks not completed by the end of the day are cancelled, so call in the morning if you plan to take one.
  • Automated services run 24 hours a day with no wait: a benefit verification letter, a replacement SSA-1099 or Medicare card, claim status and your local office's address.
  • Have your Social Security number and any letter from Social Security ready.

Best time to call: Social Security says waits are "typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month." By the same logic, afternoons, early in the week and early in the month are usually busier.
