How to use Hold Assist on iPhone
- Make sure your iPhone is on iOS 26 or later and isn't on Silent or Do Not Disturb.
- Call the business. When you're placed on hold, tap the Hold Assist prompt if it appears, or tap More (โฆ) โ Hold Assist.
- Step away. When a live agent comes back, your iPhone alerts you and shows a transcript of anything you missed. Tap to rejoin.
If the prompt never appears, check Settings โ Apps โ Phone โ Hold Assist Detection. Apple's documents disagree on whether it's on by default.
How to use Hold for Me on Pixel
- Open the Phone app โ More โ Settings โ Hold for Me, and turn it on.
- Call the business. When you're put on hold, tap Hold for me โ Start.
- Leave the call open (the screen says "Don't hang up"). When a representative returns, tap Return to call.
Google notes it may not detect every hold, or every time a representative comes back, and you can't play other audio while it runs. Early versions only worked on toll-free numbers; Google's current help page doesn't mention that limit.
Where both stop
Both features start working once you're already in the queue, on your own phone. They don't:
- Dial for you or work through the phone menu to the right department.
- Redial when the line says "due to high call volume, please call back later" and hangs up, which is how many government lines behave at busy times.
- Free up your phone. The call stays open on your device the whole time, so it needs signal and battery for as long as the hold lasts.
- Work on a landline or desk phone, which is where many office calls (insurance verification, tax pros calling the IRS) happen.
Google tested a Search feature in 2024 that called a business, navigated the menu and rang you when an agent picked up, but we couldn't confirm it's still available.
