How many Google Voice numbers can you have?

Personal (free) Google Voice assigns one Voice number to one Google Account. You can't add a second number to the same account, and you can't buy one. If you try, the app simply doesn't offer the option.

What you can do is change the number you have. Google lets you pick a new number and, for a short window, keep the old one active as a secondary so callers don't fall into a hole while you update your listings. That's a swap, not a second line.

The limit exists because personal Voice is meant to be one person's number. The moment you want two numbers for two purposes — a personal line and a business line, or a sales line and a support line — Google's answer is a second account or a Workspace subscription.

Each Google Account can have its own Voice number, and the Google Voice app supports switching between accounts. So two accounts on one phone means two Voice numbers on one phone.

1. Create a second Google Account (a plain Gmail address is fine).
2. Sign in to Google Voice with that account at voice.google.com and choose a number.
3. In the Voice app on your phone, tap your profile picture, then Add another account, and sign in.
4. Switch between numbers by tapping your profile picture and choosing the account.

The catch is verification. When you set up a Voice number, Google asks you to link and verify a real phone number. A phone number can only be linked to one Google Voice account at a time. So your second Voice account needs a different number to verify with — a second SIM, a family member's phone, or a work line. Google may let you unlink it afterwards, but calls to that Voice number will then only reach you through the app, so most people leave it linked.

The second catch is that you're now managing two inboxes, two voicemail boxes, and two sets of settings. Notifications arrive for whichever account is active plus background notifications for the other, and it's easy to answer a business call from the wrong identity.

If the numbers are for a business, the cleaner route is Google Voice as a Workspace add-on. Each user with a Voice license gets their own number, an admin assigns numbers from the console, and the Standard and Premier tiers add ring groups, auto attendants, and desk-phone support.

Workspace Voice is priced per user, and the number is tied to the user, not the business. If a team member leaves, the admin reassigns the number. That's the right model for a company with staff who each need a line, and the wrong model if what you really want is one business number that many people can answer.

• A linked number belongs to one Voice account. You can't have two Voice numbers both forwarding to the same cell through the linking mechanism. Calls to the second number reach you through the app over Wi-Fi or data instead, which is fine indoors and unreliable in a van.
• Personal Voice is US-only. You need a US phone number to verify with and a US Google Account. Workspace Voice is available in more countries, but still not everywhere.
• Inactive numbers get reclaimed. Google can take back a personal Voice number after several months without outbound activity. Forwarded inbound calls don't reliably count. A spare number you set up 'just in case' is exactly the kind that disappears.
• No short codes. Google Voice numbers can't receive most short-code texts, so a second Voice number won't work as the verification line for banking or two-factor codes.

Most people asking this question want one of two things: a separate business number, or a way to stop missing calls on the number they already have.

For the first, a second Voice account works, with the caveats above. The alternative is a proper business phone number from a provider whose whole product is business calling, where multiple numbers, shared inboxes, and team routing are the default rather than a workaround.

For the second, more numbers don't help. A second line that also goes to voicemail is just two voicemails.
