What is an exit code?

The digits you dial before the country code to tell your network the call is leaving the country. It depends on where you're calling FROM, not where you're calling to — 011 from the US and Canada, 00 from the UK and most of Europe, 0011 from Australia. On a mobile, + works everywhere and replaces the exit code entirely.

Why do I have to drop the leading 0?

Many countries use a leading 0 as a domestic trunk prefix — it tells their own network you're dialing another city. When you call from abroad the country code has already done that job, so the 0 is redundant and the call fails if you keep it. Italy is the well-known exception: keep the 0 on Italian landline numbers.

Do I need a country code to call Canada or the Caribbean?

No. Canada, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Bahamas and around twenty other territories share +1 with the US under the North American Numbering Plan, so from the US you dial them like a domestic call — 1 plus ten digits, no 011.

What does + mean in a phone number?

It's a placeholder for whatever exit code applies where you are. A number stored as +44 20 7946 0000 dials correctly from any country without editing, which is why it's the right way to save international contacts. Press and hold 0 on a mobile keypad to type it.

Is calling internationally expensive?

It depends entirely on your plan — some include certain destinations, most charge per minute, and rates vary by country and by whether you're calling a landline or a mobile. Check your carrier's rates for the specific country before a long call. Calling over Wi-Fi with an internet app avoids per-minute charges altogether.
