Microphone test
A live level meter, a peak reading, a device switcher, and a five-second recording you can play back. Find out in ten seconds whether the problem is your mic, your settings, or the app.
Your browser will ask for permission to use the microphone. Nothing is recorded or uploaded unless you press record, and even then the clip stays on your device.
Reading the result
Bar moves when you talk, peak above 25:the microphone works. If people still can't hear you in a particular app, that app is using a different input; pick the same device in its audio settings.
Bar moves faintly, peak under 25:the mic is on but quiet. Raise the input volume in system sound settings, move closer, and check that a case, a finger, or a sticker isn't covering the mic hole.
Bar flat on every device: the mic is muted at the system level, the browser has no permission, or the hardware has failed. Fix permission first (the lock icon in the address bar), then system mute, then try the recording on another device to rule out the hardware.
On a phone, the speakerphone microphone is separate from the handset one, so a mic that passes here can still fail on speaker calls. The speakerphone troubleshooting guide covers that case.
Microphone test FAQ
How do I test my microphone?+
Press Start above and allow microphone access when the browser asks. Speak at normal volume and watch the level bar: a peak above about 25 means the mic is working. Press Record for a five-second clip and play it back to hear what the other side of a call actually hears.
Why does the meter stay flat?+
Usually the wrong input is selected: a Bluetooth headset, a webcam mic, or a disconnected device. Use the device dropdown to switch. If every device is flat, the microphone is muted in system settings, or the browser doesn't have permission (click the lock icon in the address bar).
The test works, but people can't hear me on calls. Why?+
The calling app is using a different microphone from the one the browser tested. Check the app's audio settings and pick the same device that worked here. On phones, speakerphone uses a separate mic from the handset, so it can fail on its own; see the speakerphone troubleshooting guide.
Does this test work on iPhone and Android?+
Yes, in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android, over https. iOS asks for permission per site; if you tapped Don't Allow once, re-enable it under Settings, Safari, Microphone, or in the page's settings via the aA button.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?+
No. The meter and the recording run entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API and MediaRecorder. The five-second clip is kept in memory on your device and discarded when you leave the page.
