How to unblock a number on iPhone

Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts, then swipe and tap Unblock. iPhone keeps one shared list for calls, Messages, and FaceTime, so removing a number once clears it everywhere.

iPhone stores every number you've blocked in a single list, and that one list is shared across the Phone, Messages, and FaceTime apps. It doesn't matter which app you blocked the number from — it shows up in all three, and removing it from any one of them unblocks it for calls, texts, and FaceTime at once. Here's how to get to it, plus the two situations where a number stays unreachable even after you've cleared it.

Unblock a number in Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Phone.
  3. Tap Blocked Contacts. You'll see every number and contact currently blocked.
  4. Swipe left on the entry and tap Unblock — or tap Edit in the top right, then tap the red minus button beside it and confirm.

The change takes effect immediately. The same list is reachable from Settings → Messages → Blocked Contacts and Settings → FaceTime → Blocked Contacts; all three open the identical list, so use whichever you find first.

Unblock someone from the Phone app instead

If the number is in your recent calls, you can do it without opening Settings:

  1. Open the Phone app and go to Recents.
  2. Tap the ⓘ button beside the number.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Unblock this Caller.

The same option appears at the bottom of a saved contact's card, and in Messages by tapping the contact's name at the top of the thread → Info → Unblock this Caller.

Unblock a number you never saved as a contact

Blocked numbers that aren't in your contacts appear in the Blocked Contacts list as raw digits rather than names, which makes them easy to miss in a long list. Two things help:

  • The list is sorted with saved contacts first, so scroll to the bottom to find bare numbers.
  • If you can't find the number at all, it probably wasn't blocked on the phone. Check the carrier app instead — see the section below.

One quirk worth knowing: if you blocked a number and then later saved it as a contact, it stays blocked, and it'll now show the contact name rather than the digits you were looking for.

What changes for the caller after you unblock

While a number was blocked, their calls went straight to your voicemail with a single ring on their end, and their texts silently failed to arrive. After unblocking:

  • Their next call rings normally. Nothing about the block is retroactive.
  • Texts sent while blocked never arrive. They weren't queued — they were dropped.
  • Voicemails left while blocked were kept. Open the Phone app → Voicemail and scroll to the bottom for Blocked Messages.
  • They are not notified that you unblocked them, just as they weren't told when you blocked them.

Still blocked after you unblocked them?

Two common causes, neither of which lives in iPhone settings:

Silence Unknown Callers. If this is on and the caller isn't in your contacts, iOS sends them straight to voicemail without ringing — indistinguishable from a block. Turn it off under Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers, or save the caller as a contact.

A carrier-level block. If you blocked the number through Verizon Call Filter, AT&T ActiveArmor, or T-Mobile Scam Shield, the call is stopped on the network before it reaches your iPhone, so iPhone settings can't release it. Open the carrier's app and remove the number from its own block list.

If neither applies and calls still aren't arriving, work through calls going straight to voicemail — a Focus mode or leftover call forwarding produces the same symptom.
