Why is my phone going straight to voicemail?

This is the number-one cause. If you (or an app, or a carrier setting) turned on unconditional call forwarding, every call routes to the forwarding destination and your phone never rings — it looks identical to going straight to voicemail.

The fix is one code: dial *73 to cancel forwarding, then wait for the confirmation tone. Do Not Disturb silences incoming calls and sends them to voicemail without ringing. On iPhone it's in Settings → Focus → Do Not Disturb (and check the moon icon in Control Center); on Android it's in Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb. A scheduled Focus or a 'bedtime' schedule can switch it on automatically, so check the schedule, not just the current state. If DND is the culprit, allowing calls from your contacts or favorites is usually enough to let real callers through.

Both iPhone and Android have a setting that silences calls from numbers not in your contacts. On iPhone it's Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers; on Android (Phone app → Settings → Blocked numbers / Caller ID & spam) an equivalent filter can route unknown or suspected-spam calls straight to voicemail. Great for cutting spam, but it also silences new customers, delivery drivers, and anyone calling from a number you haven't saved. Turn it off if you're missing legitimate calls.

If only one specific person goes straight to voicemail, you've probably blocked that number. Blocked calls never ring — they go straight to voicemail (or are rejected outright). Check your block list: iPhone at Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts, Android in the Phone app under Settings → Blocked numbers. Remove the number to let it ring through again.

If the phone can't reach the network — Airplane Mode on, no coverage, or powered off — calls go straight to voicemail because there's nothing to ring. Swipe into Control Center (or the notification shade) and confirm Airplane Mode is off, check you have bars, and toggle Airplane Mode on and off once to force the phone to re-register with the network. A quick restart fixes a surprising share of 'straight to voicemail' cases for this reason.

Less common, but if callers report reaching a full or dead mailbox, the issue is on the voicemail side rather than the ring. Call your own number from another phone to hear what callers hear, delete old messages to free space, and if the greeting is missing or the box was never set up, walk through how to set up voicemail.

If you've ruled out everything above, the problem may be on the carrier's side — a provisioning glitch, a SIM that's lost registration, or conditional forwarding set at the network level. Re-seat the SIM, restart the phone, and if it persists call your carrier and ask them to check for call forwarding or 'do not disturb' flags on the account itself. Dialing *#21# (GSM phones) shows whether any forwarding is registered at the network level.

If calls only go to voicemail at home or at the office, the phone is probably on Wi-Fi Calling and the handoff between Wi-Fi and cellular is failing — for a moment the network thinks you're unreachable and routes the call to voicemail. Toggle Settings → Phone → Wi-Fi Calling (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi Calling (Samsung) off, test a call, then turn it back on. If the problem follows one particular Wi-Fi network, it's usually the router blocking the traffic Wi-Fi Calling needs — try another network. One ring and then voicemail is a different symptom from no ring at all. It means the network reached your phone and then gave up, and the usual reasons are:

• Conditional forwarding with a short timer. 'Forward when unanswered' is set and the no-answer delay is at its minimum (5 seconds). On Android, open Call forwarding → Forward when unanswered and lengthen the delay to 20–30 seconds, or clear it. On GSM carriers ##61# removes the rule entirely.
• Weak signal. The phone answers the network's page, loses the connection, and the carrier falls back to voicemail. One bar in a basement or a parking garage is the classic case.
• A call-screening app. Spam blockers and carrier apps (Verizon Call Filter, T-Mobile Scam Shield, Truecaller) can reject a call after the first ring. Check the app's blocked and auto-reject lists.

If *#61# reports a number you don't recognize, that's normally your carrier's own voicemail platform — not a forwarding hijack.

Google Voice, business phone apps (RingCentral, Dialpad, OpenPhone), and some spam blockers install their own call-routing rules — business hours, screening, do-not-disturb schedules — that sit on top of the phone's settings. If your number runs through one of these, open the app's settings before touching the phone's: a schedule that ends at 5 pm sends every evening call to voicemail while the handset looks perfectly fine. If nothing above changes anything, clear the phone's network configuration: iPhone Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings; Android Settings → General management → Reset → Reset network settings. This wipes saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings but nothing else, and forces a fresh registration with the carrier.

If it's still happening after that, call the carrier and ask two specific questions: is there a call-forwarding or do-not-disturb flag on the account, and is the line provisioned for VoLTE? Those two account-side settings explain most of the cases a handset reset can't. Lines that recently changed carrier or plan — a number port, a SIM swap, or a network migration — are the usual suspects.

Searching this because a friend's, partner's, or customer's phone sends you straight to voicemail? The same list applies on their side: their phone may be off, on Do Not Disturb, out of coverage, or already on a call. Going straight to voicemail on its own doesn't mean you're blocked.
