What is visual voicemail?

Traditional voicemail lives on a server at your carrier. To hear it you call in (usually by holding 1), listen to a menu, and play messages in the order they arrived. Nothing about a message is visible until you've listened to it.

Visual voicemail keeps the messages on the same carrier server but downloads them to your phone over a data connection as they arrive. Your Phone app then shows them as a list:

The important point is that visual voicemail is a presentation of your carrier's voicemail, not a separate mailbox. If it isn't set up, callers still reach the same voicemail box and you can still dial in.

Every iPhone has visual voicemail built into the Phone app — tap Voicemail at the bottom right. Whether it actually shows a list depends on the carrier supporting it, and the major US carriers all do.

The first time you open the tab you set a voicemail PIN and record a greeting; after that messages appear automatically. Two related iPhone features are worth knowing:

• Transcription. iPhones transcribe messages into text under each entry. Accuracy is good for clear English, patchy for names and numbers, and the transcript is a convenience, not a record — always listen before acting on a phone number.
• Live Voicemail (iOS 17 and later). When a call goes to voicemail, the caller's message is transcribed on screen while they're leaving it, and you can pick up mid-message. It's handled on the phone rather than at the carrier, so it works even where visual voicemail sync is flaky.

If the Voicemail tab shows a Call Voicemail button instead of a list, the carrier feature isn't active. Some carriers need cellular data on (not just Wi-Fi) for the initial setup; toggle Wi-Fi off, open the tab again, and if it still doesn't populate, contact the carrier to enable it on the line. Android is less uniform because Google, Samsung, and the carriers each ship their own version.

• Google Phone app (Pixel and many other phones): open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, Settings, then Voicemail, and turn on Visual voicemail if your carrier supports it. Transcription is available on Pixel for supported carriers.
• Samsung Galaxy: the Samsung Phone app has a Voicemail tab that becomes visual voicemail on supported carriers. If the tab dials a number instead, the carrier hasn't enabled it.
• Carrier apps: T-Mobile has a dedicated Visual Voicemail app, Verizon has offered transcription as a paid add-on on Android, and AT&T's Visual Voicemail is built into its supported phones. If the built-in Phone app doesn't offer it, the carrier's app usually will.

On most US postpaid plans, basic visual voicemail is included. Transcription is where carriers differ: iPhone transcription is done by Apple and is free, Google's transcription is free on Pixel, and some carriers, Verizon among them, have sold transcription on Android as a paid add-on. Check your plan.

Data use is small — each message is a short audio file, well under a megabyte. It does need some data connection to fetch new messages, and a few carriers insist that connection be cellular rather than Wi-Fi. If messages aren't appearing while you're on Wi-Fi with cellular data switched off, that's the reason.

It makes voicemail easier to read. It doesn't change the fact that the caller reached voicemail.

For a personal phone that's fine. For a business number it's the wrong problem to solve. Ask any receptionist: a large share of callers who hit a business voicemail don't leave a message at all — they hang up and call the next listing. A transcript of the ones who did leave a message is nice; the ones who didn't are invisible.

So if you're setting up visual voicemail on a line customers call, treat it as the safety net, not the plan. The plan is answering.
