How to check voicemail on any phone

Most iPhones use Visual Voicemail, so you can see every message and play them in any order.

1. Open the Phone app.
2. Tap the Voicemail tab in the bottom-right.
3. Tap any message in the list to play it.
4. Use the scrubber to skip around, or tap the speaker icon to play out loud.

On Android, how you check depends on whether your carrier offers visual voicemail.

1. Open the Phone app and look for a Voicemail tab or app.
2. If you see a list of messages, tap any one to play it.
3. If there's no list, press and hold the 1 key to dial your mailbox and listen through the menu.

The dial-in method works from your own phone or any other phone — handy when your battery's dead or you're traveling.

1. From your own phone, press and hold 1, or dial your own number.
2. From another phone, dial your own number, then press * or # when your greeting starts.
3. Enter your voicemail PIN when prompted.
4. Follow the menu to listen, replay, save, or delete messages.

Some carriers also offer a direct access code. A few common ones:

If a code doesn't work, your carrier's exact method may differ — dialing your own number and pressing * or # almost always gets you in.

Once you're listening, the controls are similar everywhere.

• Replay: tap the message again, or press the replay key in the dial-in menu.
• Save: keep important messages so they don't expire.
• Delete: clear out old messages so your mailbox doesn't fill up.
• Call back: in Visual Voicemail, tap the caller to return the call.

A full mailbox stops new messages from coming in, so it's worth clearing old ones every so often.
