How to set up voicemail on Android

This is the method that works on almost any Android phone, regardless of brand.

1. Open the Phone app.
2. Tap the keypad icon.
3. Press and hold the 1 key until it dials your voicemail.
4. When prompted, create a voicemail PIN.
5. Record your greeting after the tone, then follow the prompt to save it.

That's it — your mailbox is live. If holding 1 does nothing, your carrier may need to activate voicemail on your line first.

Visual voicemail lets you see a list of messages and tap to play any one, instead of listening in order. Whether you have it depends on your carrier.

• Open the Phone app and look for a Voicemail tab or icon.
• If you see a list of messages, visual voicemail is already on.
• Some carriers (like Verizon or T-Mobile) use their own voicemail app — install it from the Play Store if prompted.
• If there's no voicemail tab anywhere, your carrier likely uses dial-in voicemail only.

Visual voicemail is the easiest way to check your voicemail at a glance.

You can re-record your greeting any time, either through your visual voicemail app or by dialing in.

1. Press and hold 1 to dial voicemail.
2. Listen for the menu — greeting options are usually under a "personal options" or "settings" menu.
3. Choose to record a new greeting and follow the prompts.
