How to set up voicemail on Android

Android voicemail depends on your carrier โ€” here's how to set it up no matter who you're with.

Setting up voicemail on Android is a little different from iPhone, because Android leaves more of it to your carrier. Some carriers give you a slick visual voicemail app; others just want you to dial in and follow voice prompts. The universal starting point is the same on every Android phone: open the Phone app and press and hold the 1 key. From there, the prompts walk you through a PIN and a greeting.

Set up voicemail on a Pixel or generic Android

This is the method that works on almost any Android phone, regardless of brand.

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap the keypad icon.
  3. Press and hold the 1 key until it dials your voicemail.
  4. When prompted, create a voicemail PIN.
  5. Record your greeting after the tone, then follow the prompt to save it.

That's it โ€” your mailbox is live. If holding 1 does nothing, your carrier may need to activate voicemail on your line first.

Use visual voicemail on Android

Visual voicemail lets you see a list of messages and tap to play any one, instead of listening in order. Whether you have it depends on your carrier.

  • Open the Phone app and look for a Voicemail tab or icon.
  • If you see a list of messages, visual voicemail is already on.
  • Some carriers (like Verizon or T-Mobile) use their own voicemail app โ€” install it from the Play Store if prompted.
  • If there's no voicemail tab anywhere, your carrier likely uses dial-in voicemail only.

Visual voicemail is the easiest way to check your voicemail at a glance.

Change your Android voicemail greeting

You can re-record your greeting any time, either through your visual voicemail app or by dialing in.

  1. Press and hold 1 to dial voicemail.
  2. Listen for the menu โ€” greeting options are usually under a "personal options" or "settings" menu.
  3. Choose to record a new greeting and follow the prompts.

If your carrier has a visual voicemail app, look for a Greeting or Settings option inside it. Need help with the wording? Try our voicemail greeting generator.

Samsung Galaxy is a little different

Samsung phones run Android, but Samsung's Phone app and some carrier integrations behave differently enough that they deserve their own guide.

If you have a Galaxy S, A, or Z series phone, follow our dedicated Samsung voicemail setup guide. For everything else Android, the press-and-hold-1 method above is your friend. You can also see the overview of voicemail setup across all phones.

What happens when callers reach your Android voicemail

Voicemail is a fine backup, but it's a weak front line for a business. When a customer calls and lands in your mailbox, a lot of them just hang up and dial the next business that shows up in search. That's especially costly for appointment-based work where the first business to answer usually wins the booking.

A 24/7 AI answering service answers those calls live instead, handles the usual questions, and books the appointment into your calendar โ€” so your Android voicemail only ever catches the rare overflow, not your best leads.

FAQ

Why won't my Android voicemail set up?
The most common reason is that voicemail isn't activated on your carrier account yet. Press and hold 1 โ€” if you get an error tone or recording, contact your carrier and ask them to provision voicemail on your number.
How do I get visual voicemail on Android?
Check the Phone app for a Voicemail tab. If it's not there, your carrier may offer a separate visual voicemail app in the Play Store. Not every carrier and plan supports visual voicemail, so dialing in by holding 1 is the reliable fallback.
What's the default voicemail number on Android?
On most Android phones you don't dial a number at all โ€” you press and hold the 1 key in the Phone app's keypad and it connects to your mailbox automatically. You can also dial your own phone number and follow the prompts.
How do I reset my Android voicemail PIN?
PIN resets are handled by your carrier, not the phone. Log in to your carrier's app or website, or call their support line, and ask to reset your voicemail PIN. Once reset, you'll set a new one the next time you dial in.
Can I stop calls from going to voicemail entirely?
Not really โ€” voicemail is the carrier's fallback when you don't pick up. What you can do is have something answer before voicemail does. RingOwl picks up live around the clock so calls get handled instead of dumped into a mailbox.
