How to change your voicemail greeting on iPhone

If your iPhone has a Voicemail tab, this is all you need.

1. Open the Phone app.
2. Tap the Voicemail tab in the bottom-right corner.
3. Tap Greeting in the top-left corner.
4. Tap Custom to record your own (or Default for the generic greeting).
5. Tap Record, say your greeting, then tap Stop.
6. Tap Play to review it, then tap Save.

That's it — your new greeting is live immediately. To re-record, just repeat the steps and save over it.

Visual Voicemail is a carrier feature, not an iPhone feature — which is why some iPhones don't show the Voicemail tab at all. If yours is missing, your carrier uses dial-in voicemail.

1. Open the Phone app and tap the keypad.
2. Press and hold the 1 key to dial your voicemail.
3. Listen for the personal options or settings menu.
4. Choose to record a new greeting and follow the prompts.

• Lead with your name or business name.
• Keep it under 20 seconds.

A few things trip people up when recording on iPhone.

• No sound on playback: check your ringer isn't silenced and your volume is up.
• Greeting won't save: make sure you have a cell signal — Visual Voicemail needs a connection to save.
• Custom option is greyed out: your carrier may only allow the default greeting; dial in by holding 1 instead.
• Want to switch back: tap Greeting → Default any time to drop the custom one.
