How to change your voicemail greeting on iPhone
Updating your iPhone greeting takes about 30 seconds โ here's exactly where to tap.
Change your greeting with Visual Voicemail
If your iPhone has a Voicemail tab, this is all you need.
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the Voicemail tab in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Greeting in the top-left corner.
- Tap Custom to record your own (or Default for the generic greeting).
- Tap Record, say your greeting, then tap Stop.
- Tap Play to review it, then tap Save.
That's it โ your new greeting is live immediately. To re-record, just repeat the steps and save over it.
If you don't see a Voicemail tab
Visual Voicemail is a carrier feature, not an iPhone feature โ which is why some iPhones don't show the Voicemail tab at all. If yours is missing, your carrier uses dial-in voicemail.
- Open the Phone app and tap the keypad.
- Press and hold the
1key to dial your voicemail. - Listen for the personal options or settings menu.
- Choose to record a new greeting and follow the prompts.
If holding 1 doesn't connect, contact your carrier โ voicemail may not be activated on your line yet. For setup from scratch, see the main voicemail setup guide.
Write a greeting worth recording
Before you hit record, know what you're going to say. A good iPhone greeting is short and gives the caller a clear next step.
- Lead with your name or business name.
- Keep it under 20 seconds.
- Tell callers when you'll get back to them.
- For a business, add your hours or a website.

Fix common iPhone greeting problems
A few things trip people up when recording on iPhone.
- No sound on playback: check your ringer isn't silenced and your volume is up.
- Greeting won't save: make sure you have a cell signal โ Visual Voicemail needs a connection to save.
- Custom option is greyed out: your carrier may only allow the default greeting; dial in by holding
1instead. - Want to switch back: tap Greeting โ Default any time to drop the custom one.
Once your greeting's set, here's how to check the voicemails people leave you.
A greeting is good โ answering live is better
Even a great greeting can't book an appointment. And the reality is most callers won't leave a message at all โ when a business call hits voicemail, plenty of people just hang up and call the next number on the list.
That's the case for a 24/7 AI answering service. Instead of playing a greeting and hoping for a callback, RingOwl answers live, handles common questions, and books the appointment into your calendar. Keep your iPhone greeting polished for the rare overflow call โ but let something pick up live for the calls that matter.

FAQ
- How do I change my voicemail greeting on iPhone?
- Open the Phone app, tap the Voicemail tab, tap Greeting in the top-left, choose Custom, then tap Record. Say your greeting, tap Stop, and tap Save. The new greeting goes live right away.
- Why is there no Greeting button on my iPhone?
- The Greeting button only appears with Visual Voicemail, which is a carrier feature. If your carrier uses dial-in voicemail instead, there won't be a Voicemail tab โ press and hold the 1 key to dial in and change your greeting through the voice menu.
- Can I save a voicemail greeting before recording over it?
- iPhone doesn't keep a copy of your old greeting once you record a new one and save. If you want to preserve a greeting, record it separately with the Voice Memos app before you overwrite it in Visual Voicemail.
- Why won't my new iPhone greeting save?
- Visual Voicemail needs a cellular connection to save changes. If you're on Wi-Fi only or have no signal, the save can fail. Move to an area with cell service and try again.
- Should my business voicemail greeting tell people to call back?
- It can, but a callback puts the work on you and risks losing the caller. Many businesses instead use an AI answering service like RingOwl to pick up live, so the caller gets helped and booked immediately rather than leaving a message and waiting.
